Senior Night – Nick’s Riverside Grill

Last night was the last official senior night sponsored by GW. If you were not there it was a great time. The outdoor patio was open and the bar was packed. Even though there was a massive rush to the bar the entire night it was still enjoyable. Seeing people from freshman year is always fun, especially when you make plans to “hang out soon”. If you have been saying that for more than a week without any plans it’s not going to happen.

An interview with Julie Pizzutillo revealed that she was indeed enjoying the night (maybe too much) and that there should be more of these things. Of course I made that up but if I did ask her that is what she would have said.

The line was long for most of the night but the only complaint was that the last call was at 1:30. Way to early for our standards.

Overall, good job to whoever set that up.

I made it one past my goal of 100 posts when I started back in August. Thanks to everyone who reads this and has made a comment and shared a thought with me.

I’ll continue to write here as long as I feel inspired to share news and thoughts about GW.

Billy Crystal – Parent’s Weekend

In an announcement that the University obviously released early to quell students that are in an uproar about commencement they stated the Billy Crystal will be the comedy act on Parent’s Weekend.

SJT – no longer keynote speaker

Amidst the tragedy at Virginia Tech, President Trachtenberg just announced through the GW News Wire that he will no longer be this years Keynote Commencement Speaker.

“As you know, there has been a spirited discussion on our own campus over the past week about commencement. I would like to have us move forward in unison. To this end, I have asked my colleagues responsible for commencement weekend to try to improve and articulate our plans. Rather than providing a single keynote address, we are reviving a model used successfully in the past by which the commencement audience will receive words of wisdom from each of our five stellar honorary degree recipients, as well as our extraordinary student speaker who resumed her studies at GW after a tour of duty as a U.S. Marine in Iraq.“

So the students have won. But after Monday’s events I just feel lucky enough to be able to attend my own commenement…

GW – Ready for an emergency?

I was reading Riki Parikh’s blog entry today which raises some great points. GW is definitely not in the position to handle what happened yesterday at Virginia Tech. We do not have a great way of communicating to all students efficiently and quickly. Here is a quote from the interview conducted:

According to GW spokeswoman Tracy Schario said that in the event of an “ongoing incident,” GW is encouraged to visit the Campus Advisories Web site. “We will send a blast email, which requires a VP approval, for select incidents,” she said.

However, because of the number of people who receive that e-mail, it takes several hours to distribute, said Schario. The University can also issue a “Web alert which is a flashing icon on select gwu web sites that will direct people to the Campus Advisory.” There is also a telephone number that students and parents can call.

A flashing web alert? A few hours to send an email? Is this really the only way of distributing vital information? At the beginning of this year I signed up for DC Alerts which is an alert system from DC Gov’t. I receive an email and a text message whenever there is urgent news pertaining to DC residents. I think that we should begin to explore our options and not have to resort to chance.

Tragedy at Virginia Tech

Since this is breaking news I will let the major news sources cover the story. I do want to express my sympathies to all the students, faculty, and family in these tough times.

So far there have been 31 confirmed people dead while 29 people are injured making it the worst shooting rampage in U.S. history.
